As the first housing for senior citizens and disabled persons to be sponsored by a nonprofit group in Kern County, the Saint John Manor, which includes 79 one-bedroom apartments, is a unique project and an important achievement for the community.
The sponsor, Saint John Missionary Baptist Church, had no prior experience with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Section 202/8 Program and relied heavily on M&AA for guidance through the complicated process.
The Saint John Manor is sited across P Street from Lowell Park and one block away from the area’s Senior Citizen Center. The building’s community rooms and exterior patio areas face Lowell Park, allowing seniors to view park activities. Many of the building’s residents take meals and participate in scheduled activities at the nearby Senior Citizen Center.
