This project involved the addition of a classroom block to the existing Poplar Elementary School campus which is part of the Fontana Unified School District. This addition provided the campus with new classrooms, a computer room and a resource library as well as additional restroom facilities for students and staff.
The Poplar Elementary School is a classically designed campus of brick and glass from the 1960's which relied on natural ventilation and took advantage of exterior as well as interior spaces and the relationship between the two. The site for this classroom block builds upon and enhances the existing structure of the campus. The building’s design is in keeping with the character and philosophy of the original campus buildings while providing for the modern requirements of a state-of-the-art school. In keeping with the traditions of the existing campus, the building was designed to take advantage of natural light with both eye-level and clerestory glazing, while incorporating HVAC systems appropriate to modern schools. The classrooms are also “smart” and are fully wired and equipped for computer usage and appointed with state-of-the-art teaching walls.
The building’s siting allowed for construction of the new facility during the academic year while the rest of the campus remained functional.
